Nissan Pulsar N15
Nissan Pulsar N15 buyer's guide: the front-drive giant killer
The N15 Pulsar ran from 1995 to 2000, and to most of the world it was a sensible little hatch or sedan you would lend your mum. Depending where you lived it wore a different badge: Almera in Europe, Sentra across a swathe of other markets. The coupe went to North America as the 200SX. Skip the shopping-trolley versions though, and there is a proper JDM weapon hiding in the range, and it does not have a turbo anywhere near it.
The one thing to know: SR16VE NEO VVL
The hot N15 lives or dies by one engine, the SR16VE, a naturally aspirated 1.6 that revs to the moon. Standard tune is 175 PS at 7,800 rpm with a redline near 8,300, which works out to roughly 108 hp per litre from a factory Nissan four with no boost. That is territory turbo cars twice its size were charging you extra for.
NEO VVL is Nissan's answer to Honda's VTEC. It runs two sets of cam lobes: a mild pair for pottering around town, and a wild high-lift pair the engine swaps to up top. Cross that threshold and the little 1.6 stops behaving like an economy engine and starts screaming, pulling hard to a redline most road cars never see. That switchover is the whole personality of the car, and it is why the hot N15 punches so far above its 1,596cc.
VZ-R N1: the homologation special
This is the one people whisper about. Nissan handed the SR16VE to Autech, who massaged it into the SR16VE N1: 200 PS at 7,800 rpm and a redline that climbs to 8,600 rpm on the Version II. That is around 123 hp per litre from a road-legal 1.6, and for years it was cited as the most powerful naturally aspirated 1.6 production engine going. Take that title with a pinch of salt because these claims get argued over, but nobody disputes it was rare air.
The N1 was built lean for touring-car homologation, so it came stripped. It tipped the scales around 1,090 kg thanks to a seam-welded shell and a cull of anything heavy. Even the rear wiper and heated rear glass got deleted to save grams. It is a raw, focused thing rather than a boulevard cruiser, and prices reflect how few made it out. Buy on condition and service history, not on the badge alone.
VZ-R: the one you can actually live with
The standard VZ-R arrived around September 1997 and is the smart pick for most people. You get the same 175 PS SR16VE and the same manic top end, but with the interior trim and sound deadening the N1 threw in the bin. Full NEO VVL experience without paying homologation-hero money, and you can daily it without hating your life. Both hatch and sedan were offered, so pick your poison.
GTI: the sensible warm grade
Below the VZ-R sat the GTI, running the SR18DE, a plain 1.8 twin-cam making somewhere near 140 PS at 6,400 rpm. No trick valve gear and no fireworks at the top, just a torquier, more relaxed warm hatch. It is a genuinely nice car and easier to live with, but if you came for the NEO VVL party this is not the ticket. Confirm which engine is actually under the bonnet before you hand over cash, because the badges can lie.
| Grade | Engine | Power | Redline |
|---|---|---|---|
| VZ-R N1 | SR16VE N1 (Autech) | ~200 PS @ 7,800 | 8,600 (Ver II) |
| VZ-R | SR16VE NEO VVL 1.6 | 175 PS @ 7,800 | ~8,300 |
| GTI | SR18DE 1.8 twin-cam | ~140 PS @ 6,400 | lower |
On ownership: these VVL engines are tough if they have been looked after, but they earn their keep at high rpm, so a tired one has usually been thrashed. On a test drive listen for a clean cam switchover with no rattle or flat spot up top, and check the usual N15 rust traps around the arches and sills. Plenty of these have been swapped to the 2.0 SR20VE NEO VVL, the big brother of this engine, which adds the mid-range torque the 1.6 sorely lacks. If that is the case, just make sure it was done properly.
