Nissan Skyline KPGC10 2000GT-R

The definitive Hakosuka

When people picture the original GT-R, they picture this one. The KPGC10 is the two-door hardtop coupe that arrived in October 1970, a year after the sedan. The nickname “Hakosuka” (box Skyline) belongs to the whole C10 family, but it is the coupe that became the icon, and it is the shape the money chases hardest.

The same S20, in the body that made it famous

Like the sedan before it, the coupe runs the S20: the 2.0-litre twin-cam six with its 24 valves and triple Solex carburettors, about 160 horses at 7,000rpm, born from the Prince R380 race car. In the shorter, lighter, stiffer two-door shell it was the sharper racing weapon, and it is the version that carried the GT-R's touring-car dominance to its peak. Same race-bred engine, better body for the job.

The peak of the streak, and the car that ended it

The GT-R's famous run of consecutive touring-car wins happened with these cars, and it finally came unstuck when a rotary Mazda Savanna RX-3 beat them to what would have been the fiftieth straight victory. Worth being honest about it: a good chunk of those wins were class wins rather than outright, but the dominance was real, and it is what built the entire GT-R myth.

The one the money wants

Around 1,197 coupes were built. You will often see “1,945” quoted, but that is the combined sedan-plus-coupe total, not the coupe on its own. Clean KPGC10s have sold at auction for a quarter of a million dollars and more, which puts the definitive Hakosuka among the most valuable Japanese cars there are, in the same conversation as the Toyota 2000GT. This is the collector's original GT-R, and the build data and logged cars are below.

The Nissan Skyline KPGC10 2000GT-R was the replacement to the first GT-R, the PGC10 2000GT-R. It was released in October 1970 and was a 2 door hard top coupe which was slightly shorter and lighter than the 4 door version. It is claimed there was 1197 produced. Unfortunately we don't have access to the production data to verify this.
